CLIMATE
Kigata Pupils Climate action Outreach, Kabale

in partnership with Ebapreneur Solutions, Kichini Gardeners conducted a school outreach; to create awareness on climate change and food production among primary
students of Kigata Primary School, Kabale district. The project was funded by Real Food Systems through and in partnership with Ebapreneur solutions. 150 students and 5 teachers were trained; “How to use organic, sustainable Gardening practices to address climate change as well as safe food production at micro-level”.

Gardening
Kichini Gardeners Home Gardening

The project was conducted when the country was still facing the covid19 pandemic, lockdown. children were home and food to feed a family of 5 was a challenge in our project area. The project was conducted in Kireka and 100 children were involved with 10 gardens that were setup and monitored. It invoved setting up different gardens, making compost, education on climate change and sustainable practices, that can be conducted from home.

With the project, children participated in video recordings to send out Call-to-action messages to other children. the project further involved mothers as the immediate supervisors to the children’s gardens.

EDUCATION
Climate Education in schools

This was the second phase of Kichini Gardeners gardening project, “Introducing climate education into schools” through gardening of vegetables, flowers and fruit trees, for young people to actively participate in climate change and be ambassadors. We received support from the Kofi Annan Foundation, where 3 schools were involved each with 3 gardens for leafy vegetables, carrots, onions and flowers, with fruit tree seedlings. over 150 pupils from St. Anthanasius Prirmary School, Katwe Primary School and Mulago Bright Standard were engaged. The project further involved developing “My Planet Volume 1” book for children to engage on climate action daily

ART
Communicating ARTISTS

This targets children and youth participating using their talents, to communicate. With the communicating artists, children and youth send out call-to-action messages to fellow young people and elders to respond to Nature protection.

With this young people participate in global art competitions, writing stories, poems or quotes that greatly show how young people are stepping up to fight for the rights of their planet for generations of today and tomorrow.

Empowerment
From Hunger to Empowerment

At 12 years old, Gamba survived on a single meal of cassava flour and beans each day. Her story reminded me of my own childhood, where hunger was a daily reality. I saw firsthand how malnutrition affects children—limiting their ability to concentrate in class, perform well, and even dream beyond their circumstances. This experience ignited my passion for ensuring that every child, even if eating just one meal, consumes a diverse and nutritious plate.

Motivated to make a difference, I founded Kichini Gardeners Initiative, a non-profit organization that empowers children (8–16 years), women, and youth with sustainable agricultural skills to establish home gardens for vegetable and fruit tree cultivation. In Uganda, 3 in 10 children are undernourished, and 53% of women suffer from anemia due to iron deficiencies. Through Kichini Gardeners, we are changing this reality. Families not only grow their own nutritious vegetables but also generate surplus produce for sale, covering scholastic needs and supporting their children’s education.
