Kichini Gardeners Initiative Project Our World Update (2023 Recap)

As we step into 2024, let’s carry the momentum forward, continuing to sow the seeds of positive change. Together, we can cultivate a world where every young person thrives. As we usher in the New Year, we reflect on the impactful strides made in 2023 under Project Our World at Kichini Gardeners Initiative. Our unwavering commitment to nurturing the potential of every young person has driven us to create positive change in communities.

At Kichini we Connect, Learn, and Lead empowering Youth and young children through Sustainable gardening, Throughout the year, we focused on empowering young minds through resilient gardening practices. Our initiatives are not only aimed at ensuring food security but also imparting valuable hands-on skills, enabling informed choices for a sustainable future.

As you traverse the villages of Kayunga district, the sight of 2-4 pupils in their homesteads, assisting parents in cultivating fields, welcomes you. As we commemorated World Food Day on 16th October 2023, themed “Water is life, water is food, Leave no one behind,” Kichini Gardeners joined the global celebration at Nakivubo C/U Primary School in Kitimbwa Sub County, Kayunga District.

On D-day, the head teacher of Nakivubo C/U Primary School Iremera Moses revealed that the school has always recorded numerous cases of pupils leaving before the end of the day due to lack of food.” During planting and weeding seasons, attendance dwindles as children are often kept at home to aid in cultivation. Even those who attend may not receive proper follow-up from parents on their studies, placing the burden on teachers.

Moses underscored challenges like insufficient stationery and the prevalence of Gender-Based Violence affecting student attendance. With Kayunga having a high number of alcohol consumers, pupils bring home-induced anger to school, impacting their peers.

The absence of positive role models is evident, as Old boys and Old girls, unable to further their education due to various reasons, foster a different attitude toward learning. This lack of inspirational figures contributes to a decline in students’ commitment to education.

Irene Nagudi, Founder of Kichini Gardeners Initiative, expressed gratitude to Nakivubo C/U Primary School for hosting the World Food Day commemoration. Through resilient gardening, the initiative aims to instill environmental consciousness in children, fostering responsible citizenship.

Kichini Gardeners Initiative strives for transformative change by connecting children to nature, empowering them through gardening to combat food insecurity and hunger, ultimately

World Children's Day

On November 20th, World Children’s Day, we joined hands with Nakivubo CU Primary School in Kayunga district to amplify the voices of young minds. Pupils eloquently expressed the impact of climate change on their food security and mental well-being, showcasing the need for urgent action.

“For Every Child Every Right,World Children’s Day with the theme “Let’s Talk Climate” was a success where over 154 children at Nakivubo C/U Primary School sent out their messages to the world calling on leaders, teachers, and parents to listen to their cry for and views.

A highlight of the day was the active involvement of children in tree planting. This hands-on experience emphasized the importance of including the younger generation in the global fight against climate change and the pursuit of food security.

In a world driven by capitalism, the essence of gratitude often takes a back seat amid the constant pursuit of improvement. At Kichini, we recognize the importance of pausing to appreciate what we have, making gratitude a fundamental aspect of our identity.

It was a moment of reflection and thankfulness that rejuvenated us.
